“Rarefaction: The Magnitude of Small Space” Curated by Vickie Arndt

rarefaction noun

rar·e·fac·tion | \ ˌrer-ə-ˈfak-shən \

Definition of rarefaction

1: the action or process of rarefying

2: the quality or state of being rarefied

3: a state or region of minimum pressure in a medium traversed by compressional waves (such as sound waves)

Small works of art on sizeable white exhibition walls - it’s one’s perception - that they resonate with sound at first. It is a whisper, a hissing, a vibration. With a confident tone of voice that captures your attention, you move in to try to hear what is being said - like a conversation. There is something that is intimate and intangible that will draw you in and, once close, the work immediately presents a visual story and understanding. It’s a way that an artist can speak closely and directly to the viewer.

A great example of this is a work by Frida Kahlo: Niña con máscara de la muerta - Girl with Death Mask (She Plays Alone) . This is an oil painting, measuring 6 by 4 inches from 1938. In a description of the work from the Museum of Fine Art + Boston via Artfix Daily.com: “The allure of such small objects perhaps helped Kahlo see the monumental visual power that could be developed in small dimensions.” That six-by-four-inch painting carries a significant impact.

The Public Arts Commission is happy to announce this first exhibition at ArtFest 2022. PAC is dedicated to continuing to present excellent exhibitions servicing local artists and local collectors. It is a great opportunity to see small artworks in a non-dedicated small space.
